The holidays are fast approaching along with painful family road trips. And the endless asking … are we there yet. Well, not this year! We are getting our Road Trip Games on! I know all too well that after a long car ride, the kids are burnt out and you just want to get to Gma’s. The nagging, the whining, the frustration, what’s next… dun dun dun … introducing the Best Road Trip Games for Kids.

That’s right! How about some good old fashion Road Trip Games for kids of all ages. I know you’re laughing. I’m serious though. This stuff has been my saving grace and sanity for years and still is. On average, the typical American travels 50+ miles or more over the holidays. And that’s on the low end. I’ve discovered, electronics can only go so far and that’s exactly why we’ve put together this list of road trip games.

In today’s article, I’m going to share some of our favorites, some of the classics, and even one we found at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant (you don’t have to go there to get it though.) The Road Trip Games for Kids I share in this article can be played in the car, on the plane, or even on the train. I’ve saved them into an Amazon List for easy access and the last one I discuss is an easy list of free games!

5.) Free Road Trip Games

  • 20 Questions: This is a fun game and super easy. A player asks another player to think of something in a general category. The other player then tries to guess what they are thinking by using yes-or-no questions. If the paying guessing uses all 20 questions and still hasn’t guessed correctly they are given 5 additional questions. If those questions fail, the other player is declared the winner.
  • I Spy with my little eye: One person starts by says “I spy with my little eye” and the rest of the group guesses. Whoever guesses correctly wins and gets to be the spy.
  • Alphabet Game: With this game, you start with the first letter of the Alphabet, A. For example, you may say “A big green grasshopper was jumping alongside the road. The next player takes the following letter. In this example, it would be the letter B. Because the grasshopper was wearing a red bandana a taxi stopped him. After that, the following player would continue with the letter C. To sum it up, the game can turn into a pretty funny story.
  • License Plate Game: This is one of our favorite car games for kids. First, decide how long you want to play. We usually play for 15-20 minute sessions. Each player needs a sheet of paper or you could use dry erase board. The goal is to write down as many different license plates that you spot on the road. The player with the most states at the end is the winner.
